Blepharoplasty Post Operative Care
All cosmetic surgery involves risks and individual results vary. Cosmetic surgery is a serious decision. Decisions about whether to proceed should be made after careful consideration and following at least two consultations with a qualified medical practitioner.
This page provides post-operative instructions for patients who have had blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) with Dr Roth. Please read it carefully before your operation.
Immediate Post-Operative Care
- Apply cool compresses to your eyes for the first two days — small ziplock bags of frozen peas work well; rotate through the freezer. Ten minutes per hour while awake is appropriate
- Keep your head elevated for the first three days; do not bend over
- Do not squint, frown, or make excessive facial movements
- Do not wear make-up
- Avoid lifting anything heavy
Wound Care and Medications
The prescribed antibiotic ointment should be applied to the wounds twice daily. During the first few days the eyelids may not close completely due to swelling — in this case, apply the antibiotic ointment into the eye at night to prevent dryness. Lubricating drops during the day may also be helpful. Note that ointment placed in the eye temporarily blurs vision.
If you had a transconjunctival lower eyelid blepharoplasty, you may be prescribed eye drops containing both a steroid and antibiotic — use these as directed.
After three days, warm compresses can be used to soften any dry blood and assist with gentle cleaning.
After Suture Removal
Sutures are removed at approximately seven days after surgery. After removal, avoid rubbing the eyelids. Numbness just below the incision lines is normal and common. Limit sun exposure and apply SPF 30+ sunscreen to the area to reduce pigmentation change.
Follow-up Appointments
Sutures are removed at approximately seven days. A second post-operative appointment is usually scheduled at six weeks.
