Hearing Loss
Hearing loss is a very common problem seen by ear, nose and throat specialists. There are a very large number of causes. The ear has outer, middle and inner components. A problem in any of these can lead to hearing loss.
Many types of hearing loss come on gradually over many years. It is also possible to experience very sudden hearing loss. If you suddenly lose hearing in one ear you should see your general practitioner urgently. Sometimes urgent treatment is required to help preserve and restore hearing.
Some types of hearing loss can be treated with medications, others can be treated with surgery. The assessment, investigation and treatment of hearing loss is performed by ear, nose and throat specialists. They will almost always also involve and audiologist in your care to perform hearing test and if necessary assist with the fitting of assisted listening devices such as hearing aids.
