Blepharoplasty Post Operative Care

Dr Jason Roth (MED0001185485) — Specialist Otolaryngologist & Head and Neck Surgeon, specialist registration in Otorhinolaryngology, Head & Neck Surgery.

Blepharoplasty Post-Operative Care

Immediately After Surgery

  1. Apply cool compresses to your eyes for the first 2 days. Small zip-lock bags of frozen peas work well and can be rotated through the freezer. Apply for 10 minutes per hour while awake.
  2. Keep your head elevated as much as possible for the first 3 days. Do not bend over.
  3. Avoid the following: squinting or frowning, excessive facial movement, wearing make-up, and lifting anything heavy.
  4. Contact Dr Roth promptly if you notice: excessive pain, bleeding, or swelling; any changes in vision; or a fever above 38.5°C.
  5. Attend your follow-up appointment one week following surgery for suture removal.
  6. Take all medication as directed. Paracetamol and ibuprofen may be taken as needed for pain.

Eye Ointment and Drops

  • Antibiotic ointment will be prescribed and must be applied to the wounds twice daily.
  • In the first few days, the eyelids may not close completely due to swelling. Apply antibiotic ointment to the eye surface at night to prevent dryness. Lubricating drops during the day may also be needed. Note: ointment placed in the eye temporarily blurs vision.
  • Patients who have had a transconjunctival lower eyelid blepharoplasty may be prescribed combined steroid and antibiotic eye drops.
  • After 3 days, warm compresses can be used to soften any dry blood and assist with gentle wound cleaning.

After Suture Removal (approximately 7 days)

  • Avoid rubbing the eyelids — this may cause the wounds to re-open.
  • Some numbness below the incision lines is normal and expected.
  • Your second post-operative appointment is usually at 6 weeks.
  • Limit sun exposure and apply sunscreen to the incision sites to reduce pigmentation changes during healing.
If you are concerned at any time after surgery, contact Dr Roth’s rooms on (02) 9982 3439. Outside business hours, attend your nearest emergency department or GP. If your surgery was performed at Wyvern Private Hospital, Castlecrag Private Hospital or  North Shore Private Hospital, you may also contact the ward nursing staff — note these hospitals have no emergency department and no on-site medical staff overnight.
